Arsenal has confirmed that attacker Gabriel Jesus has undergone knee surgery and will be absent for some time as part of his recuperation.

The Gunners acknowledged the bad news in a statement, which read: “Gabriel Jesus underwent successful surgery on his right knee after injuring it during Friday’s World Cup group stage encounter between Brazil and Cameroon.

“Gabby’s rehabilitation program will now commence.

“Everyone at the club is supporting Gabby and will be working hard to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible.”

Without their £45 million man, Arsenal will have to face Newcastle, local rivals Tottenham, and possibly Jesus’ previous club Manchester City.

Arsenal will still believe their chances of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League to be solid, thanks to the big cushion they have built up after a strong start to the season.

It remains to be seen whether Arteta will try to sign a replacement for Jesus in the coming weeks, once the January transfer window opens.
