Banks will be closed nationwide beginning Monday, February 20, 2023, according to the Association of Senior Staffs of Banks, Insurance, and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI).

The directive comes as more bank branches across the country are targeted by hoodlums due to naira scarcity.

During a media briefing in Lagos on Thursday, warned that it might be forced to direct its members not to work.

This could be avoided if the government and relevant security agencies can put an end to the attacks on banks and their employees.

The association addressed a letter to all Unit Presidents and Secretaries with the reference ANS/IIR/JA/OP/5018. “Stay at home order,” it said.

“The National Secretariat has received numerous reports of threats and attacks on the lives and property of members and bank branches.

Subsequently, we have been on the field to monitor and confirm the reports”. Examine the letter.

“We issued warnings and appeals to the Government to provide security measures for the safety of lives and properties of our members within and around the bank premises.

Unfortunately, the attacks have continued without any form of security for our Members’ safety.

The recent was the attack today, Friday 17 February 2023 on one bank branch at Epe. Lagos State”.

We cannot expose our members’ lives and property to obvious danger.

“As a result, all members should refrain from working today in any state where bank branches have been attacked.

This will be repeated every day until normalcy is restored.

“Please keep in mind that you will be provided with additional guidelines as events unfold,” the statement concluded.
