The former Germany and Arsenal playmaker, Mesut Ozil has announced his retirement from professional football.

After struggles in Turkey, the 34-year-old Turkish-born maestro, who also played for Real Madrid, admits “it’s time to leave the big stage.”

Ozil made the announcement on his social media accounts. He had been playing for Istanbul Basaksehir in the summer, but has only made eight appearances for the club this season due to a series of injuries.

‘Good day, everyone. After careful consideration, I have decided to retire from professional football’. He posted it on Instagram.

‘I’ve had the privilege of being a professional football player for almost 17 years now, and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity.

‘But, having also suffered some injuries in recent weeks and months, it’s become increasingly clear that it’s time to leave the big stage of football,’ he says. He went on.

‘It has been an incredible journey full of unforgettable moments and emotions. I’d like to thank my clubs – Schalke 04, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal FC, Fenerbahçe, Basaksehir, and the coaches who helped me, as well as teammates who have become friends’. He came to a conclusion.

Mesut Ozil stole the show during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He was also a key member of the German team that won the World Cup in 2014.
