Manchester United defender, Lisandro Martinez has provided an update from his hospital bed after undergoing surgery for a fractured metatarsal.

In the last seconds of United’s 2-2 tie with Sevilla in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinal on Thursday, the Argentine star dropped holding his foot.

He needed help getting off the field and was carried off by Sevilla international teammates Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel.

Martinez had fractured a metatarsal bone in his foot, which would keep him out for the rest of the season, according to an examination the following day. The defender has now recovered from surgery to treat his ailment.

“Everything went really well, thanks to God! Many thanks for all of your messages. Now focusing on the recovery”, Lisandro Martinez wrote on Instagram on Monday.

The Argentine defender, 25, is expected to be fully recovered in time for the start of the next season. After Raphael Varane was forced off in the same game, Erik Ten Hag’s team will now be without both first-choice centre-backs.

Martinez posted on Instagram a few days after his accident, saying, “Not the way I imagined what’s been a very special season would end, but sometimes we face obstacles along the way that we have to overcome to make us stronger, and we learn from them.”

“I know I’ll be back for more very soon.” In the meantime, I’ll continue to help all of my teammates reach our goals.

“The amount of messages and support I’ve received has been incredible; they’re giving me strength and encouragement right now.” Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart.”
