The Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described the election on Saturday, February 25, 2023, as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Nigerians to change the country’s trajectory in all aspects.

Obi stated that the day would allow Nigerians to press the reset button and reboot the country by bringing in new leaders who will provide security of life and property, as well as economic and political freedom.

The former governor of Anambra State also expressed his belief in Nigeria’s abundance of human capital needed to steer the country’s affairs in the right direction, but lamented that the country is “bedeviled by the impunity of a few individuals who have perfected the dubious act of state capture.”

He stated these during a Zoom session with supporters, where he also stated that issues of national importance required urgent deliberation and that the process would begin next week Saturday.

“Fellow Nigerians, we are down to crunch time – seven days to the main day,” Obi said. Our diversity is our strength. Nigeria must be reset and rebooted in all aspects, including leadership and governance, security of life and property, and economic and political freedom.

“We must celebrate our shared values and responsibilities. I have not come out for myself in this march to freedom! I have come out in support of the millions of young people who are losing hope in our beloved country! Datti and I want to bring about a new Nigeria that is possible!

“I’ve come out for the millions of women who are terrified of the future and what it holds for them and their children!” I’ve come out for the poor who are wondering if being a Nigerian is a sin! I’ve come for them! Datti has arrived for them!”

In terms of security, the Labour Party candidate stated that he would modify the national security architecture through comprehensive reform of the security sector and governance.

“We will restructure, re-equip, and re-orient the Nigeria Police,” Obi added. This will include federal, state, and community policing. We will increase the population-to-police officer ratio and ensure a properly staffed, equipped, and technologically driven security system.”
